Readability

Readability is really important to a websites design as it allows the user to view the content on a site clearly and easily.  If users struggle to read or understand content, they’re likely to leave the page. Readability is all about the users experience at reading the content on screen.

The importance of readability in web design.

Improve Experience
Readability is very important as stated above, it allows the user to clearly and easily read and interact with the content on the site, if the content is readable and looks like, it engages the user to stay on the site for longer.

Retention

If content on a site is more readable, it also makes the content easier to remember, which in turn means the user is more likely to return to the site again.

Elements of Readability

Line spacing

Line spacing is very important to readability as it allows the text to have its own space and not look cluttered and messy, which allows it to be easier to read

Font and font size

The use of a clear font across all pages of the website, easier to read on screens, these help to create continuity but also creates familiarity to the user. Also making sure that the font size is not too big and too small the user cannot read it.

Colour scheme

A clear colour scheme across the site, generally black text on a white background, makes the text contrast most and allows for the easiest reading experience on a website. Developers should avoid difficult to read colour combinations like red text on a green background.

The example below show how the use of differnt font size, font colours, uneven line spacing and lack of a clear colour scheme on the site can cause the site to appear messy, cluttered and become an eye sore for the user

Mistakes in usability

Fonts

Using small font sizing will impact the user experience of a site as the user will struggle to read what is on the site. Also using fonts that are hard to read impacts the experience and will most likely force the user to leave the site.

Using hard to read colours

Using colour combinations that do not match, like the example above, red text on a green background will cause the user reading discomfort.

Short paragraphs and lack of scanability
Readability is enhanced when sentences are concise, and paragraphs are short. Two or three sentences per paragraph to make content more approachable and scannable.

Readability is very important to a user’s experience on a website as it keeps the user engaged, retain information and allows the user to scan through the site quickly.
Prioritizing readability is not only about aesthetics; it’s about creating a welcoming, accessible experience that respects users’ time and attention.
